The Canadian Forces' Supplementary Death Benefit (SDB)

The Canadian Forces' Supplementary Death Benefit (SDB) provides a tax-free lump sum to beneficiaries, typically twice your annual salary (rounded up), acting like decreasing term life insurance for active members, Reservists on Class "C" service, and those releasing with a pension, with costs and coverage changing after retirement, eventually becoming a $5,000 paid-up benefit at age 70. It's part of the public service pension plan, with deductions from pay/pension, and you name your beneficiary to receive the payment.

How it Works

  • Coverage Amount:

Generally, it's twice your final annual salary, rounded up to the nearest $1,000 (or $250 for CAF members).

  • Contributions:

A small amount is deducted from your pay or pension (e.g., $1 per $10,000 of coverage).

  • Beneficiary:

You designate who receives the benefit by completing a form (PWGSC-TPSGC 2196E or CF-FC 2223).

For Active & Retired Members

  • Active Service: If you die while serving, your beneficiary gets the benefit.
  • After Release (with Pension): If you release with an immediate pension and meet service requirements, coverage continues, with deductions from your pension.
  • After Age 61: The benefit reduces by 10% annually until age 70, when it becomes a $5,000 paid-up coverage for life at no further cost.
