Military history

In January of 1979 I joined “A” Sqn. of the Prince Edward Island Regiment, (17th, Recce) & did my GMT training in Charlottetown. I was promoted to corporal the following year.

I took my TQ1 training in MTC Aldershot and Jr. NCO (CLC) training at CFB Summerside with the field portion at CFB Gagetown. During my 3 years with the PEIR I taught 2 Summer Youth Employment Courses as well as 2 GMT courses. For the most part I taught weapons & drill & some driver training. I participated in many exercises from “Troop” level to the annual “District” exercises as a Crew Commander conducting reconnaissance patrols.

I was selected to go to Egypt as a duty driver for 6 months in 1981 but shortly before I was to go it was cancelled. In the meantime all callouts to Cyprus & Germany for that year were filled so I did not do a UN or Nato Tour.

In December of 1981 I joined the Regular Force & did my basic training in Cornwallis & was posted to Calgary with “A” Sqn. Lord Strathcona’s Horse (Royal Canadians) I spent 1982 & 83 with the Ceremonial Mounted Troop (HQ Sqn) & was on parade in Edmonton for Prince Charles & Lady Dianna in 1983.

In September of 1983 I was released from the Forces on a medical discharge. I was told I could remuster to any other trade except combat arms but being an Armoured Soldier was my interest & reluctantly I was released from the Canadian Forces.

One afternoon CAVUNP Member, Tom Hradec approached me and asked if I would be interested in playing the Lament for a ceremony being held at the Museum of the Regiments and on August 9, 2001, I played my First UN Peacekeepers Day Ceremony.

I have played all the Peacekeepers Day Ceremonies since & have been made an Honorary Member of the Calgary Chapter.

On May 25, 2005 I was honoured to be asked to join the Regimental Pipes & Drums of the Calgary Highlanders on the occasion of the City of Calgary’s Farewell Ceremony for Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II at the Saddledome.

Civilian:

In 1985 I joined Alberta Correctional Services & after completing 20 years at the Calgary Remand Centre. I have moved on to become a Provincial Constable with the Alberta Solicitor Generals Department and recently a Sheriff.
